In 2005, as part of the first stage of the Information Systems Management and Governance Project, an extensive consultation with the whole UK Higher Education sector was carried out; this included meetings and interviews with expert advisors and the project steering group, and also a survey of all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the UK. 

The 2005 ISMG survey achieved a very high response rate of 65% (responses from 111 of 170 HEIs) and greatly informed the work of the project.  The survey exercise allowed the project team to develop an informed understanding of the current IT management and governance procedures in place within HEIs, identify the types of tools and frameworks found useful and identify gaps in management and governance procedures. 

The survey results provided broad benchmarking data for institutions and fed into future project work such as development of the Information Systems Management and Governance Framework and toolkit.  Individual survey results are referenced in project documents and outputs as appropriate and an analysis report of all survey results is linked below.
